Some Stats...

  • 45% of 16-24s informally volunteer at least once a month
  • Although Labour won the 2005 election with 9.5 million votes, 17 million registered voters didn't go to a polling station.
  • In 2005:
    • 37% of 18-24 year olds ...
    • 75% of over 65's...
    • 47% of BME people...
    • 62% of white people...
    • 54% of those in the lowest social classes...
    • 70% of those in the highest social classes...
      ...voted.
  • The number of people who have taken part in a demonstration went up from 6-13% between 1974 and 2000
    • 2002: Countryside Alliance demo - 400,000 people
    • 2003: Anti-Iraq demo - 1.5 million people
    • 2005: Live 8 - 150,000 people
  • The number who had signed a petition went up from 23% to 81%.
  • People are also now morely likely to boycott things which are made unfairly or harm others
  • only 14.7% of people said that they had a very strong attachment to a political party in 1997 - compared to 44% of people in 1964... and only 20% of people think that politicians are trustworthy.
